GETTING AROUND SALT LAKE

   Salt Lake is laid out in four quadrants with Temple Square in the center (Click the map at left & print it). Streets are numbered sequentially in all directions, radiating from the streets that run along the South and East sides of Temple Square. Main Street runs N-S along the East Side of Temple Square. It is zero East and zero West. South Temple is the name of the street that runs E-W along the South side of Temple Square. It is zero North and zero South. We suggest you read this paragraph again, and memorize it

The Streets running North & South:
     The first street East of Main Street is 100 East (aka State Street). The second is 200 East, or 2nd East, etc. etc. And conversely, the first street West of Main Street is 100 West (1st West), the second street is 200 West (2nd West), etc. Some streets also have names as well. For example, 1st West is better known as West Temple because is runs N-S along the West side of Temple Square.

The Streets Running East & West:
    South Temple street runs E-W along the South side of temple Square. South Temple is zero North and zero South. The first street North of South Temple (got that?) is 100 North, more commonly known as North Temple. The next street traveling North is 200 North, and on, and on.

Navigating the City:
    The Dead Goat Saloon and Blue Iguana Restaurant are both located in Arrow Press Square, which is at 119 South, West Temple, or 1.19 blocks South of zero South (South Temple street) on West Temple. So, if you are standing in front of the Marriott Hotel on the corner of 1st South and West Temple, you go .19 blocks South. Take special note of the comma in the address after "South". This indicates that the address consists of two different coordinates. Most addresses do not include this comma and people get lost looking for a street named South West Temple. There isn't one. As an example. Fred Myer grocery store is located at 450 So., 600 E. From that same spot in front of the Marriott you go South on West Temple street to 400 So. (3 blocks), turn East, go 6 blocks to 600 East and turn South one half a block. There it is. Pretty simple.
